I apologize for my tardiness with this post. I am away visiting one of my fabulous sisters and meeting my beautiful new niece! I wasn't able to get online until now!

As you may have previously read in my blog, my friends, Allan and Christina, are getting married this September. We have been busy scouring Etsy, Ebay and the rest of the web to find some amazing little details.

Here are some of the things we've found and purchased!

These cute little custom made cake/pie toppers are perfect for the vintage feel of the wedding. They add a little fun and whimsy.

This is a great cake/pie stand we found on Etsy and it's a perfect color for the scheme!!

Christina and Allan are planning a great Candy Buffet! These are some custom "goodie" bags for the candy!

These are some labels for the jars on the Candy Buffet!

And finally, here are some fantastic frames for the tables! We're not doing numbers though, so you'll have to tune it for that!

Book Review: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

So I finally finished reading "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", and I do realize that I may be the last person on earth to read this book...haha.

Here's the synopsis:

"Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared off the secluded island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger family. There was no corpse, no witnesses, no evidence. But her uncle, Henrik, is convinced that she was murdered by someone from her own deeply dysfunctional family. Disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist is hired to investigate, but he quickly finds himself in over his head. He hires a competent assistant: the gifted and conscience-free computer specialist Lisbeth Salander, and the two unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves."

To be honest, it took me a while to get into it. I haven't watched any of the movies, Swedish or American, but seeing the adverts for the American movie did help motivate me to carry on.

The climax and twists in the book, were completely unexpected, for me anyway. I've read some other people's reviews and they felt that they could have done without some of the twists, as it did get somewhat gruesome.

It also lets you see a side of society that you may not have considered and the characters are well developed. I thought, a few pages in, that this book was going to be more about the political or financial world, but I was happy to see that it was really merely a backdrop to the story.

I'm going to do a new rating system of spools. So I am giving this book, 4 out of 5 spools, as I really did enjoy it.
Now I am onto the 2nd book in the series "The Girl Who Played With Fire". I am also enjoying it, so far :) I do plan to watch the movies, but only after I'm finished all the books.

Wedding Wednesdays - Guest Book Ideas

Happy Wednesday!! Sorry about missing last week, but I had the nasty flu.

We are in countdown mode here for Allan and Christina's fall wedding and things are falling into place so well.

We've had a lot of discussions and one of them has been on guest books... so I pulled in some ideas.

I love the vintage-ness of the hankies! I collect vintage linens, so this one is a bit of a favorite. The couple had guests sign the hankies and they are planning to make them into a quilt.

Have your guest sign different areas on a world map, great for a destination wedding or a wedding with a lot of out-of-town guests.

How about having your guests create a special note for the couple, using various colors. They can then be binded into a book or added to a scrapbook.

New Year, New Word

Happy New Year!! Last year, about this time, I remember reading someone's blog about the new year. They were talking about giving yourself one word that you either want to strive for or just to be your motto for the year to come. I decided on my word for the year and that's IMPROVE.

IMPROVE means so many different things for me and spans a big range. Self improvements are mainly what I'm focusing on; body, mind and spirit. However, I'm also applying this to my crafts, mainly knitting and quilting. I want to improve my knowledge and techniques.

What's your word for 2012?

Hello lovelies! The Christmas season is soon upon us and I honestly think, there's nothing like it. But let's step away from that and think to the weddings. A lot of the weddings I have been to, and I'm sure you have too, have had an open bar. Most brides and grooms who host their own wedding (not in a hotel or something like that) will provide an open bar but with a more limited selection. These selections usually fill everyone wants, so there is never a problem. However, instead of having the bartender list off everything they have, a bar menu is the way to go. VMQG / FVMQG Potholder Swap

A New Quilt

Last year my little sister gave birth to my wonderful and amazing nephew! He's brought so much love and light into our lives. Next January, my other little sister (I'm the oldest of 4 here)... is having her first. We don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet.
So my sister's baby shower is this weekend, however, she lives in Gatineau, QC, near Ottawa, so I won't be attending. But I made something to send along....

I should note, this is a quilt for my sister, not the new baby. I think it's nice to do things for the momma at baby showers, since she's going to get some much for the baby anyway. This is something nice that she can curl up with when she's feeding and snuggling that precious new baby!

My sister tends not to read my blog, I believe, so I'm not really worried about her seeing it ahead of time and if she does, oh well.

It was actually my first time quilting without any pre-planning, I think I probably should have done more around the blocks, but I don't think it's too bad. I threw it in the washer and dryer last night, so it's a little wrinkled. Also, I'm still deciding if I like the back, but it was a good way to use up the fabric. Thanks to my "willing" assistant Karen for holding it up :)

PotHolder Swap

The VMQG had a full day retreat on Saturday and it was great. I love sewing retreats as they make me buckle down and get things done, since I get so distracted at home. The retreat was a FULL day, 9am to 10pm, with probably a hour and a half of not actually sewing. I worked on two projects, details to come.
At our last VMQG meeting there were requests to see if anyone was interested in a PotHolder swap with the Fraser Valley Modern Guild. I thought, why not?? So I signed up and during the retreat, I got my partner's details...
So now I need to come up with a design. It's tricky and I don't want to give too much away on my blog, so let's see what you guys think of these different ones :)

I hate to be the one to say it, but Christmas is coming... fast!! I really like to make a gift for someone and then buy them something else.

Throughout the year, I bookmark various projects I see that I think someone would like (and I would like to make). I have a crazy long list this year. I don't know why I'm mentioning this, as people on my list will be reading this. Maybe writing down that I have to get going will motivate me!!!

Adding Some Color

Hello Lovelies. I decided to add some color to my living room by quickly throwing together these cushions on the weekend. Everything worked out right. I had the perfect amount of fabric and the pillow forms (from IKEA). I got the fabric from the ever wonderful Spool of Thread, which is such an awesome place! There's more light on this side of the living room, hence why they aren't on the couch or chair, haha.

It's great since you can come back later, remember what it was you specifically liked and know where it came from. Well, here we are for our first Wedding Wednesday! I thought we'd show you the first item we have purchased for the wedding.

Yep, it's a birdcage! As with anything in a vintage DIY wedding, this still has quite a way to go. We purchased this for the gift/card table from Etsy for the cards to be put in. We are planning to add ribbon and possibly different flowers in the color scheme, but we are still working on the color scheme, which really is an ongoing process. So we'll be showing you the finished product once we've gotten it and made it vintage-y :)

As you can see it they fall into similar schemes of pastels. I'm loving the corals, mints and teals. They looks so great together and very popular this year. Don't you love the flowers in the bottom photo!!

Rue Magazine

Just thought I'd fill you on one of the latest online magazine issues that have come out.

RUE Magazine has come out with Issue 5.

It's a fantastic issue and I highly recommend you take a look! The Studio Tour of PR Panache is amazing, my little cubicle at the office certainly comes no where near it, but I am now looking for a great red chandelier to hang in it, haha.
It just screams SUMMER with great entertaining ideas and plenty of tips. I LOVE the videos that they have of their photo shoots with really great soundtracks, check them out!
My favorite design duo The Novogratzs from Sixx Design have one of their designs featured, which is great to see, along with all the other home decor features.
They have a great column portraying bloggers as well, and this issue is Ez from Creature Comforts and Jan from Poppytalk (YAY for our LOCAL GAL!!!).
This is definitely one of my favorite online publications. It has fantastic photography and I love all the contributors. One to watch and look for great things to come! CHECK IT OUT!!

Baby Sling

As you know, I have a new guy in my life, my little nephew (4 months today!). My sister has been wanting to make a baby sling for him for a while now but we haven't gotten the opportunity to get together with her and my Mum to make it. Finally on Easter weekend it was time. We used the free pattern and tutorial from Handmade-Adelaide-Baby and it worked out great! We lined it with mirco-fleece so it's been great for the cool days, although now we need to start thinking about one for the summer. She has a self-lined one that seems like it would work. These don't take a lot of fabric and really are pretty simple to put together. Here's our finished project complete with model!

A while ago a friend of mine got into book binding and making these great little notebooks with leather binding. She was getting big remnant bags of leather in all kinds of colors from an upholsterer. I decided to jump on the bandwagon as well and got myself a bag without any idea of what to use them for.
Well, I found one! I made myself a knitting needle case. Just something simple to hold a few long needles....

So it's time to share some of my projects I've mentioned in my last few posts.
Here's a baby related one. One of the few things my sister specifically requested from me was a handmade diaper bag. We went back and forth on the patterns and settled on this one: The Hip Mama Diaper Bag. I lined it with PUL, which is a waterproof fabric and the outside is a heavy cotton from IKEA, so nice and cheap :) Anyway here are some pictures:

New Year, New Beginnings...

Well, we are well into the New Year now and hopefully it's treating you right so far...
I've been busy with life and other craftiness. I have a new nephew on the way in the upcoming weeks so some of my time has been consumed with baby things. I will post some creations once I have some good photos. He's the first grandchild for my parents and niece/nephew for us, so it's very exciting.

Late last year I joined the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild and I'm working on a small wall hanging for show-and-tell for the next mtg, I will also post photos once I get the time. It's a fun group of folks and I have enjoyed the few mtgs that I've attended :) I'm looking forward to the challenges and events in the upcoming year with them.

How were your holidays? Mine were relatively quiet. I got a Michaels card for a gift and promptly went Boxing Day shopping, but I was good, I didn't spend it all. I decided to take up knitting (stop laughing) and got some Alpaca yarn and needles. I'm knitting a cowl/neck warmer-type scarf like this one, but not ribbed or red (mine is plum)....

I've also got some fab toggles for it. Of course, it'll probably be too hot to wear, but I really do enjoy knitting, it's a lot more relaxing than I thought. It's very easy to leave and pick up later. Of course, my mum was showing me how to knit, and was teaching me while doing one for herself. She had finished hers, decided she didn't like, taken it all apart and was half done again by the time I was half finished, ha, figures...

Online Holiday Publications

I don't know about you, but adore looking through magazines, especially the holiday issues. There are so many recipes, decorating ideas and just plain eye candy, that I always buy more magazines this time of year.
I've mentioned in a couple post of some great new online publications that have been catching my eye and a lot of them are coming out with their holiday issues now.
A new publication is Sweet Paul Magazine. It is full of great gift ideas, recipes and more!! Check it out!

Lonny Mag also has a holiday issue out as well. They aren't publishing on Issuu anymore, so I can't embed a fancy link, but here's the regular link to the new issue: October/November | Lonnymag.com. It has a great gift guide. It also has some decorating ideas, which are mainly for Thanksgiving and since that's over for us in Canada, its a little late. Mind you, this is their October/November issue, so I'm sure the December/January issue will be more focused on the holiday season. Needless to say, this is a bright and colorful issue, definitely one to take a look at.

Rue Magazine has a new issue out on Sunday November 21st, which I will have a little look through. From the previews I've seen, there hasn't been any holiday-esque things, but that's not to say it's not there....

We will not forget

I have grown up in a military family. My father served in the Canadian Navy for 40+ years, one of my grandfathers fought in WWI, the other in WWII. Even one of my grandmothers, served during WWII and my great-uncle was killed on D-Day. My family has a long history of military service. Remembrance Day has always been a day that is close to my heart. Maybe knowing that if a war happened, my father could have been called in action or just the feeling that so, so many gave their lives protecting what we all hold dear, our freedom. We live in a world that war should not exist, but it does. Men and women are fighting right now, as you read this. We may feel detached from that as we go about our daily lives, perhaps never knowing. If you don't, I encourage you to watch this video and the many more that are out there, learn and never forget!

To Re-purpose

Recycling has become important in our daily lives, we have to keep our planet healthy for the future generations. Re-purposing has become quite popular in the crafting community. There have been several books written on the topic. One of my favorites is "Sewing Green" by Betz White. It's a beautiful book, and while I have not made anything from it yet, I love all the concepts in it. I'm planning on whipping up and few projects from it and writing a review for y'all in the coming weeks.

Thrift stores are full of treasures for most, some consider them junk, but I have found some great things there. My Mum is an excellent thrift store shopper, she usually knows exactly what she's looking for. Most of the purchases are re-purposed for her art and her fabric packs that are specifically dyed in beautiful colors. You can view them and purchase them at http://www.fabricimagery.com.

It's not all about art and crafting when it comes the thrift shopping.
A few years ago, my parents bought a little place on Pender Island, on the of the Southern Gulf Islands in BC. I would say that she furnished and supplied it with about 85% garage sale and thrift store finds. It's terrific!
One of my friends, Christina, is a fabulous shopper at any time, but thrift store shopping is a great love, she's found some amazing deals!

As I mentioned last week, I participated in the Pender Island Saturday Market this past weekend. The weather was beautiful, however, with the summer coming to an end, the crowd was all that interested in crafts. No one that was selling things that were non-edible did very well, that I know of. I did take some photos as promised and I plan to load up my Etsy shop shortly.

Travels of Washington Part 2

During the weekend in Oak Harbor, WA that I mentioned in my previous post, we were able to do a little shopping and sightseeing in La Connor and Anacortes, cute little places! I think the best thing in the whole world it laughter. I spent Saturday evening at a friend's place. They have a new addition to their family, a beautiful boy named Benjamin. They also have a 21 month old daughter named, Megan. She was having a blast that night, eating chips and ice cream! I picked her up and tickled her... the laughter and giggles that came out of that little one were the most precious things to hear!

This isn't anyone I know, but how can you not smile with this....

I must admit I've been "off" blogging for a little while now. I haven't really felt I've had much to contribute.
That changed a little last week when my friend started her blog. This is something completely new to her and her excitement and enthusiasm has been a bit contagious. I promised in my last post to let you know about the shows I saw a few weekends ago. Here's my little recap.

We visited the Got Craft? show first. It was held at the Royal Canadian Legion on Commercial Drive. I've never been in the building before, but it has a good sized auditorium. There were over 55 vendors and it was busy. Usually I hate crowds, but this one was great. It was a little on the warm side in there, but it cooled down towards the end. There was some really great vendors with all kinds of items. Here's a great little selection spread over at Poppytalk.
Something I found very exciting was the DIY table hosted by Spool of Thread. They had projects to make your own pinwheel pin (see mine below). Spool of Thread is Vancouver's first Sewing Lounge! I think it's an awesome idea and I hope it really takes off. Take a look at their site, that links to their blog and you'll see why this is just so cool!

The Make-It Show was at the Croatian Cultural Centre. I've never been to the Centre before, but it's a great venue. I had won tickets to get in through V.I.A (Vancouver Is Awesome), which is such a great site, check it out!!
There were, I believe, over 100 vendors and a great mix of items. I was pleased to see that some people doubled up and had tables at both events, which I thought was a great plan. Both events also had some great DJs.
There were also some great examples at both shows of great eco-friendly and upcycled products; great belt buckles made from skateboards, kids clothes from adult t-shirts.
There's a great card shop called Hug + Kiss Designs. They are really some of the funniest cards I've seen. I picked one for a friend's upcoming birthday.
I also picked up a hand mirror from OlaDesigns, that wouldn't photograph well for me.

The first one of the Make-It Handmade Revolution in Vancouver at the Croatian Cultural Centre. It looks like it'll be a great show.
The second is the Got Craft? show at the Legion on Commercial Drive. This one is only on Sunday.

Have you noticed in this age of technology that more and more publications are going cyber?

Due to the economy downturn, many of my favourite magazines have closed down. However, I am finding many new ones online.

ANTLER magazine is one, “a bi-monthly online magazine promoting creativity and beauty in all facets of life.” They also have an accompanying daily blog. The two issues so far are filled with gorgeous examples of original artistry.

My love of decor magazines is realized with Lonny Magazine, which is filled with great photos and articles.

There are literally hundreds of magazines available at Issuu for your perusal. Check them out!

Well, I have just shooed everyone out the door from my annual cookie exchange. Small crowd this year, only 6, but we traded some great cookies. Got the place all dolled up for the holidays. Also a good reason to clean house ;)

Time to get crackin’ on some more blogging. Have been away too long.

There are so many amazing and clever projects out for the holidays; for gift giving, house decorating and stocking stuffing. I want to bring some of those to you in the next few weeks.

Here’s the first one to begin with from Martha. It’s a great reversible bag that is perfect for gift giving. I have mine cut out and ready to sew. Pictures to come!

Tiny Crafters

The title may be deceiving, but I saw these videos on Loobylu's blog earlier and they are just too cool not to post about. The movie Coraline came out, I think, last year or maybe earlier this year.

UPDATE: After posting these, I knew I had to see the movie, it turned out that I had the opportunity to watch it last night at a friend's place. What a gorgeous movie. Definitely one for the library. If you haven't see it, DO IT. xoxo

Cate Blanchett

I must admit, when I first saw this earlier in the week, I thought it was kinda cool. However, the more I look at it now, the more torn I am as to not knowing if this is insane or genius! HAHA Mind you Cate Blanchett has never backed down from a clothing challenge.
What do you think of it? Does it make you cringe, or are you pleased she is bringing the art of crochet and granny squares back into the limelight?

Pender Weekend

Once again, I have headed to Pender Island for the weekend. However, this time, I brought friends. Honestly, it is the first time I have been out here without my parents, which feels a little strange.

It been great. Going to the Farmer’s Market, swimming in the lake, playing Wii and eating and drinking way too much! I am so blessed to have friends like these.

They are on their way home tomorrow, but, lucky me, has the week off, so I am staying in solitude until Tuesday and then heading to another island, Vancouver Island, and the City of Victoria for the rest of the week. I have much planned for these couple days before heading off on Tuesday. I have a quilt to sandwich and start on, plenty of embroidery to do, and much more dreaming as well.

Something that has been going around the blogs and web this week is Amy Butler’s new rug collection with Chandra. These beautiful handmade rugs are very reminiscent of Amy’s popular fabric and paper designs. I don’t know if these are or are going to be available in Canada, but it is definitely something to save up for. Check them out!

I realized that I hadn’t posted about the Handmade Nation screening I went to.

The movie was great. I found it very inspiring actually. It was great to see artists doing what they love and establishing themselves in the industry. I’ve been curious about the Indie scene in Austin, TX for a while now and it gave a little glimpse into that. I loved seeing Jenny Hart being interviewed as well. I have been using her patterns for quite a while now and love them.

New Season

I am finding a new season upon me. Nothing has changed dramatically in the last little while, it just like change is in the air and I have caught it like a virus. I don’t know what is or will be but something will happen.

I am sitting on the ferry retuning to Vancouver from Pender Island, just for the weekend. My parents have a cottage/cabin there. For those not knowing BC well, it is one of the Southern Gulf Island, between the mainland and Vancouver Island. It was a time of relaxation, crab-eating, quilt making and visiting.

My blog has fallen to the wayside for the last few months. I needed to gather my thoughts and figure out what the point was. I don’t know if I’ve figured it out yet, but I decided to just get back to it and figure it out as I go along…

I also got a new laptop and I am trying out the “Windows Live Writer” that comes with Vista. We’ll see how it goes. Nice that it allows me to type up an entry without being logged into the internet, of course I will need to be to post it. I guess I could also write them in Word and transfer them over, but I thought I’d give this a try.

Speaking of “new seasons”, it also seems to be baby season and I have several friends having little ones soon. I started a belated shower gift this weekend, a little baby quilt. It’s from a panel called “ToyBox”. I put the top together, with Mum’s help and will hopefully have it finished shortly. I also have one that is a wall hanging with Peter Rabbit, that needs to be quilted. Another friend’s shower is on this weekend, my plan is to embroidery some bibs and perhaps pick something up too. I should have photos up this weekend. My addiction to Charm Packs hasn’t ceased either. I picked up about five on EBay last month. Some with plans, others without.

Now that I have made several promises of further postings, I must keep on top of those and will chat with you loveys later.

Color

I can't believe it has almost been a month since my last posting. My most humblest of apologies. I know you sit in front of your computer pressing the refresh button on this blog waiting for the next post. ;)

I am sitting here listening to the CD that never leaves the player in my bedroom, the Amélie soundtrack. I love french music and the ambiance that comes with it. I loved the movie as well. It will always be my favorite. One of the aspects that I love so much about it is the use of color. The colors are so incredibly vivid and inspiring.

Color is so over-looked in our daily lives. Most of the time we don't think about it until there is something that stands out to us, like a gorgeous blue sky or a rich green field.

Leela Ford uses color to her full advantage in her artwork. It's so beautiful. She is an incredibly talented young woman from Victoria, BC. Please visit her Etsy shop and take a look at her work. You can also find her on Flickr.

I challenge you to see with different eyes this week and take in the colors around you. I'd love hear about what you've seen.

Hopefully we'll have some examples to share over the next week.
